The film features psychotherapist Caroline Hohnecker, who has treated patients whose grandparents participated in Nazi crimes. Pastor Jobst Bittner explores how the wall of silence can be broken and healing can begin. Rita Kasimow Brown, a Holocaust survivor, shares her own story. And Frank Pfeiffer describes how his grandfather’s coldness and Nazi ideology shaped his life — and how he found his way to freedom.

My Nazi Family documentary goes beyond history. It asks why antisemitism is rising again among the younger generation around the world — and whether breaking the wall of silence is possible. The answers are sought in both psychology and faith.

How the Documentary Came to Be

The idea for the documentary was born in October 2021 in Kyiv, where the film crew attended a conference organized for Ukrainian pastors. The keynote speaker was Jobst Bittner, who addressed the wall of silence hanging over the history of Nazi families — and how healing from it is possible.

The crew had previously filmed the story of a Holocaust survivor in Israel. When these two stories came together with Bittner’s message, the ingredients for a unique documentary were in place.
